'Where Am I?' Status Board and App
UX/UI Design
Tackling the issue of not knowing where colleagues are in the work environment, this solution offers an interactive wall-mounted digital board in collaboration with a mobile app.
The Challenge
Creating an interface that could be interpreted by those in the office and would ease the process of locating colleagues by keeping everybody openly informed. The design needed to allow for custom design to suit a company's identity and offer key information in a timely fashion.
My Role
Working under the guidance of my creative director I was given free rein to explore design directions and UX considerations, leading to an initial prototype.
The physical board is in-situ, where it is easily referenced in the work environment. Dynamic information animates in and out to intelligently show what is most needed at any given moment. A roll-call or check-in at the start of the working day felt intuitive.
The supporting mobile app would be used by employees to log and update their status, which would then be displayed on the public board. This interface needed to be quick to use, asking for only a single tap, which would be convenient and hassle free. The app would also provide personalised notifications and reminders, synching with calendars.
These monochromatic designs demonstrate a minimalist neutral approach, thinking around what information would be useful to display, such as travel and weather information relevant to the location. Supported by sounds that could subtly indicate the type of information and its importance - an audio queue that would be acknowledged but not invasive. A paper folding approach was explored as a way of transitioning between screens.
Using splashes of colour and a lighthearted sense of humour to bring some unexpected moments of interest and pleasure.
Icon Set
Status, weather and travel icons are in keeping with the minimal design of the board. These would be key to the user logging their 'status' and also identifying where others are - they needed to be simple to decipher without unnecessary complexity.
